Turning the tile to one end and working in the other direction almost always guarantees a strangely sized tile at the far end that stands out like a thumb.

Thinking “in the spotlight”, you can still reach the extremities with small plates – but at least they are symmetrical.

Tile tips: exposed tile edges

This ensemble chose to leave the edges of the tiles exposed. There are a number of ways to deal with tile edges, and this is a way that works well.

If you want to do this, use the Durock tile support plate for a cleaner edge. Then paint the tile edge to the same color as the wall.

Table Tips: Backsplash and Cabinet. Think of the Gap!

It is always difficult to assess how close to the backsplash your tile will come to the bottom edge of the cabinet.

One way to do this is to install cabinets afterwards and make sure they hit exactly the top edge of the board. But this is a lot of work, and positioning the cabinet only allows you so much freedom.

Or you can cut thin pieces of tile to fill the gap. This is the most professional solution.

Or you can do what some DIY boards do: completely ignore the gap. Functionally, it doesn’t matter if there is a gap. And it’s an area that rarely gets any kind of control.

Tips for tips: Grout between faience and faience materials

Instead of gluing the joint between the countertops and the laminate boards, this toilet used mortar.

There were cracks and general ugliness.

Use the appropriate hook between the tiles and any tile-free material.
